SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At Old Mill Toronto, our commitment to social responsibility is integral to our operations. Together, we strive to make a positive impact on both our environment and our community. We acknowledge that the land we are on is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. It is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. This area, including Etobicoke, is covered by Treaty 13, signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, as well as the Williams Treaties, signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.

Honey Bee Initiative

Declared by the Earthwatch Institute as the planet’s most important species, bees face a 90% population decline due to deforestation and pesticides, placing them on the endangered list. With 70% of global agriculture relying on bees, their preservation is critical.

At Old Mill Toronto, we proudly support environmental stewardship with our honey bee initiative, maintaining two beehives of 25,000 bees each. These bees, with a flying range of up to 5 km, enhance the local ecosystem. Our gardens, featuring rosemary, thyme, lavender, linden, and aster, influence the honey’s unique flavour with a distinctive peppermint finish. Complementing our hives are pollinator bee “hotels,” offering safe havens for wild bees essential to pollination.

The honey we harvest is used in soups, dressings, pastries, and our renowned afternoon tea service, reflecting our dedication to sustainability. Prepared onsite by our chefs, our 100% organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurised honey is available for purchase at the Dining Room Hostess Reception desk, an ideal gift or treat. Support a vital environmental cause with every jar of our delicious honey, a true symbol of quality and sustainability.

Women’s Habitat

We are proud to support Women’s Habitat, a community-based organization dedicated to aiding women and their dependents. Each year, a portion of the proceeds from our award-winning Afternoon Tea service is donated to this important cause. By enjoying our Afternoon Tea, our guests contribute to the empowerment and well-being of women and children, helping to build a brighter future for those in need.

Local Food Bank

In the spirit of giving, Old Mill Toronto organizes annual food drives during Christmas and Thanksgiving and donates a portion of proceeds to support local families. We invite our guests to join us in making the festive season brighter for those in need by donating non-perishable items during the festive season. Your generous contributions help support both Women’s Habitat and The Toronto Food Bank, ensuring that our community receives the assistance it needs during the holiday season.

Earth Day

Our commitment to environmental responsibility extends to Earth Day, when our employees volunteer to clean up local areas. We encourage everyone to participate in these efforts, promoting a cleaner and greener environment. By working together on Earth Day, we help preserve the beauty of our surroundings and foster a culture of environmental stewardship.
