Every Friday and Saturday throughout the sizzling Summer, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important instrumentalists on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Looking Back and Ship Without a Sail, the latest trio recordings from saxophonist MIKE MURLEY, continue in the tradition of his two Juno award winning recordings featuring bassist Steve Wallace and guitarist Ed Bickert. Reg Schwager has replaced the now retired Bickert and brings his own subtle yet potent style to the music without radically changing the sound of the group. Always swinging and lyrical, this is mainstream chamber jazz at its best.
An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Murley is one of Canada’s finest jazz talents and one of the most versatile players on the scene today. He has appeared on twelve Juno Award winning recordings since the release of his 1990 “Two Sides” CD. Active as a leader in various formations from duo to septet, Murley still keeps a busy schedule as a sideman. Murley is currently the Jazz Area Chair of Jazz Studies at the University of Toronto.
REG SCHWAGER is one of Canada’s leading jazz guitarists and has played with celebrated such Canadian jazz musicians as Diana Krall, Rob McConnell, Peter Appleyard, Dave Young and Don Thompson.
Veteran bassist STEVE WALLACE has recorded and toured with some of the biggest names in Canadian jazz including Fraser MacPherson, Rob McConnell, Oscar Peterson, and Oliver Jones.
This evening’s all-star MIKE MURLEY TRIO features jazz masters MIKE MURLEY on saxophone, REG SCHWAGER on guitar, and STEVE WALLACE on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
