Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Fall and Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
With a strong influence in jazz and blues, soaring star singer/songwriter MELISSA LAUREN has an original style that melds old school sounds with modern flare. Her debut album, The Other Side, showcasing the jazz and swing sounds that have helped shape her distinctive musical style, was released to critical acclaim in 2012.
For her latest album, “Your Mess”, Melissa collaborated songwriting and producing efforts with Toronto bassist Mark Cashion and guitarist Eric St-Laurent, and the outcome is a quirky, more playful sound that tests an interesting balance of darker harmonies and more theatrical grooves, coupled with the singer’s signature soft and feminine word inflections.
The first single Lauren released in Canada, “Send Them Away,” was named ‘Song of the Week’ on CBC Radio in Toronto, and been nominated for a Toronto Independent Music Award.
The singer’s love for swing and jazz music began when she started performing with the Toronto All-Star Big Band, and continued singing with them until 2004. She has toured Western and parts of Eastern Canada several times, and her 2015 tour took her across Canada and Europe.
This evening’s singing star MELISSA LAUREN features ERIC ST-LAURENT on guitar and TYLER EMOND on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
