First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Spring, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Dynamic vocalist LISA MARTINELLI was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. She moved to Toronto in the mid 1980s to sing professionally and for 30 years has been working with some of the country’s finest musicians, including icons Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, Peter Appleyard, and Gene Dinovi. Tonight she returns to the Home Smith Bar with her own stellar band to explore some well known jazz compositions, music from the songbooks of Hank Williams and Stevie Nicks, and new arrangements of compositions by Bart Howard and Paul McCartney.
Martinelli studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts where she was inspired by outstanding players and teachers including Norma Winstone, Jim Hall, and John Clayton. She graduated from Humber College, the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, and completed her masters at York University.
She has been teaching at Humber College for over 20 years and for the past six years, has been the head of the vocal department there. She directs the flagship vocal jazz ensemble that has performed high profile concerts all across the GTA. The group has also been featured with guitarist Mike Stern, the New York Voices, and even the Video Games Live Orchestra at Massey Hall.
This evening’s singing star LISA MARTINELLI features KEVIN TURCOTTE on trumpet, TED QUINLAN on guitar, and MIKE DOWNES on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
