Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Fall & Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Respected across the national jazz scene for nearly three decades, the hard-swinging CANADIAN JAZZ QUARTET have established themselves, individually and collectively, among the elite of jazz musicians on air and in recording studios, in clubs and on concert stages, and at major music events and jazz festivals all over the country.
Founded by the late guitar luminary Gary Benson in 1987, the lineup has evolved over the years, but under the long-time current leadership of iconic vibes-master Frank Wright, today’s Canadian Jazz Quartet (FRANK WRIGHT on vibes, TED QUINLAN on guitar, PAT COLLINS on bass, DON VICKERY on drums) remains the standard of excellence in jazz in Canada.
After a record-breaking 9-year run creating new mainstream jazz collaborations weekly at leading downtown jazz venues, the classy CJQ now brings their graceful treatment of standards and original material to a “first Friday” residency at the Home Smith Bar, showcasing a different headlining superstar each month.
Tonight’s featured guest is
2011 Juno Award Winner, 2014 Juno Nominee, 15-year featured soloist with Grammy- and Juno-winning ‘Rob McConnell & The Boss Brass’, and National Jazz Awards ‘Arranger of the Year’ designate, JOHN MacLEOD, whose impeccable credentials in nearly every aspect of the music industry have been firmly established in a stellar career over three decades. In 2003, he formed the 20-piece John MacLeod Rex Hotel Orchestra, and has conducted the Bob DeAngelis Champagne Symphony since its inception (including a 2008 Carnegie Hall concert in tribute to Benny Goodman).
