Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Fall & Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Following a summer break, inveterate blues maestro BRIAN BLAIN (guitar, bass, vocals) returns to the Home Smith Bar with a special Blues Edition of the Year ‘Round Jazz Festival, in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar. Tonight’s stellar line-up features Downchild Blues Band pianist MICHAEL FONFARA, winner of numerous JUNO and Maple Blues Awards, who started out with Toronto’s Jon & Lee, and The Checkmates in the early ’60s before going on to play and record with international superstars like Rhinoceros and Lou Reed. Holding the backbeat will be drummer DON VICKERY, a mainstay of the Toronto jazz community who has backed up many blues legends including Jimmy Witherspoon and Joe Williams and spent decades as Jay McShann’s go-to stickman.
At 70, Brian Blain could be considered one of the “elders” on the Toronto blues scene. With four CDs in his discography, he is also respected for his work promoting other artists in his role as resident desktop publisher and computer guru for various music societies and associations. He has provided a launching pad for many young artists with his legendary “Campfire Jams” at clubs, lounges, and numerous festivals including the Toronto Jazz Festival where he hosted a blues jam at the Rex a few years back and had jazz luminaries like Roy Hargrove, Antonio Hart, and Russell Malone “playing 12-bar blues all night long and loving it”.
