Though rooted in classical technique, soul/jazz artist JULIE MAHENDRAN’s clear, powerful, and expressive voice reflects musical influences from pop to soul, funk, and jazz.    Equally at home with a soaring melody as she is scatting vocalese, she was born in Montreal, raised in Edmonton, and now lives in Toronto, the ‘musical black sheep’ of a family with an unusual mix of French-Canadian and Tamil heritage.

In addition to studying with Cheryl Bentyne (Manhattan Transfer) at the famed Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mahendran also attended Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. Her love affair with big city energy has taken her to London and New York, as well as Hong Kong where she held a summer residency as the featured vocalist at the Four Seasons Hotel. Both of her  independently-released CDs “Never Do Without You” and “Lovelight” garnered rave reviews and enjoyed airplay on jazz radio programs worldwide.

This evening’s singing star JULIE MAHENDRAN features DUNCAN HOPKINS on bass and KEVIN DEMPSEY on drums, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
