DAVID STEINMETZ is an outstanding young drummer, producer, songwriter and bandleader born and based in Toronto. He plays in various pop, jazz, funk, and hip-hop groups. He is a very versatile player, having had the good fortune of studying with many great teachers such as Jim Blackley, Larnell Lewis, Mark Kelso, Chendy Leon, and Mike Downes.

Reflecting on David Steinmetz’s tenure at Humber College, Mike Downes who is Music Program Coordinator and Bass Department Head there said, “The relationship between bass and drums is central to most jazz groups. As a teacher at Humber College, I have the opportunity to hear and play with many young drummers. One of the particular standouts is David Steinmetz. He is musical, dedicated, personable, and has a great command of and respect for the jazz tradition. He plays brushes like a real jazz player! I watched and heard him grow through his years at Humber, where he was already playing at a professional level. I’m thrilled that David is being showcased at the Home Smith Bar!”

During his studies, Steinmetz has had the opportunity to play with and be coached by some of North America’s leading jazz musicians including Christian McBride,Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Donny McCaslin, Kenny Washington, and Kendrick Scott. He is a member of the 10-piece funk band, Funny Funk, who can be seen playing at venues all over the Greater Toronto Area, as well as frequently performing with Myles Castello, Scott Helman and various jazz groups.
