Jazz composer and pianist CHRISTOPHER SIMMONS’ expressive musical palette is remarkable in that it ranges from peaceful and sublime to harmonically complex and powerful. As a sideman, his work has spanned several genres and over four decades in Canada and New York. As a leader, he has released seven albums of original compositions and standards, and has performed and recorded with some of the most prominent jazz artists of our time. His most recent album of original material is Know The Now.
Simmons began playing drums at the age of 11 and by the age of 14 he was already playing professionally. Influenced by his father, a jazz pianist, Christopher focused his attention on piano and composition while attending Mohawk College and while studying in New York City on grants from the Canada Council for the Arts. His dedication to live music and the power of sound-healing therapy is evidenced by his serving on the board of directors for the Music Can Heal Organization. He also continues to serve the Toronto community by volunteering and working with several not-for-profit arts organizations.
