On a brief Canadian stopover on tour from the UK, internationally famed trombonist CHRIS GREIVE was born in Perth, Australia, and earned his BMus degree through the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts jazz program.   He recorded and performed with many acts on the Perth jazz scene and was a finalist in the Australian Jazz Brass Awards (1996) before relocating to Scotland in 2000.

Greive has toured with the likes of The Bad Plus and Salsa Celtica and his own highly acclaimed group ‘NeWt’ (‘Ensemble of the Year’ 2012 Scottish Jazz Awards). ‘NeWt’ was chosen to represent Scotland at the ‘Made in the UK’ showcase at the 2012 Rochester Jazz Festival as well as playing dates at the London Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival, and the Vancouver Jazz Festival.

He plays lead trombone, and writes for the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO) with whom he visited the USA (2012), recording with Randy Brecker, Mike Stern, and Joe Locke (American Adventure – Spartacus Records). He currently teaches Jazz Arranging, History, and Improvisation at the RCS Jazz Course as well as directing and curating repertoire for the RCS Big Band.

The latest album from NeWt (‘NeWt North’, 2013) features music devised from, and influenced by the local environment and stories from Unst, Shetland. His role in this group as Electric Trombonist (octaver and effects)   has been his most creative work to date. Recent career highlights include expanding the NeWt ‘North Suite’ for Celtic Connections Festival (2017), performing Makoto Ozone’s arrangement of ‘Carnival of The Animals’ with the SNJO, and arranging the horns for the latest album from ex ‘Fairground Attraction’ songstress Eddi Reader.

This evening’s stellar CHRIS GREIVE QUARTET features jazz masters DAVID RESTIVO on piano, PAT COLLINS on bass, and CHRIS WALLACE on drums, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of The Home Smith Bar.
