Exemplary among ‘The New Jazz Generation’, the AVERY CANTELLO BLUES BANDan assembly of outstanding graduates and students from the University of Toronto and York University, fronted by soaring star singer Avery Cantello. While the band has a finely honed show including raunchy blues tunes, jazz standards, and blues standards, they are all artistically serious emerging artists.
In just the past year, this band has performed with Juno Award-winning saxophonist Kelly Jefferson, and Toronto jazz guitar master Mike Cado. They were winners of the 2018 “Jazz 4 The Ages” youth competition, hosted by the TD Niagara Jazz Festival, an honor that accorded them a slot in the TD Niagara Jazz “Soul Jazz in The Vineyard” concert where they opened for David Restivo, Sharon Musgrave, and Mary McKay. They also performed in the 2018 Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival, opening for the Mike Downes Trio.
