Cuban Canadian drummer AMHED MITCHELL was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and started playing drums at a very young age under the guidance of his father, a great drummer himself. Since his early 20s, Amhed has been playing and recording with Cuban music legends like “Chucho” Valdes, Cesar Lopez and Havana Ensemble, Elmer Ferrer, and Roberto Carcaces.Mitchel has called Toronto home since 2006, rightfully earning a place as a respected drummer, composer, and producer.
Mitchel has travelled extensively around the world and has shared stages with musical icons like the great Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, Dianne Reeves, and Leonel Lueke at the closing concert of the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2004. He continues to perform with artists from diverse music genres — Jane Bunnett, Hilario Duran, the great trombone player Dennis Rollins from England, the Elmer Ferrer Band, Alexander Brown’s Quintet, the John Findlay Band, the Robb Cappelletto Trio, Alexis Baro’s group, and many others.
Mitchel released his first album “Path to Heaven” (Amhed Mitchel and the Breath of Life Project) in 2013 as part of the “Lula World” Festival. The CD features an impressive line-up of Toronto-based musicians including Juno Award winner Pat LaBarbera. His second album ”Naciente” came to life in February 2017 with successful CD releases: one in Toronto at the Rex Jazz Club and a second at the famed Upstairs Jazz Club in Montreal.
This evening’s all-star AMHED MITCHEL QUARTET features jazz masters ALUIS DENNIS on saxophone, RAFAEL ZALDIVER on piano, and ROBERTO OCCHIPINTI on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of The Home Smith Bar.
