Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important instrumentalists and leading vocalists on today’s jazz scene in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
SAM BROVERMAN began his professional singing career in Winnipeg as a teenager, appeariNg in theatre and cabaret productions as well as on nationally televised music and variety shows, including “Hymn Sing” and “The Doug Crosley Show”. He supported PhD studies in Mathematics at the University of Manitoba by working as professional singer throughout his university years. After graduating, he relocated to Toronto, where he continues to be a professor of actuarial mathematics, and he has continued singing.
He has been a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir since moving to Toronto. In 2008 he recorded a five song EP, Five Standards. In the spring of 2011 he released his first full jazz album, Dream Maker, Heartbreaker: Sam Broverman Sings Johnny Mercer. His second jazz album, Leftover Dreams (2013),is a collection of songs by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen on the occasion of their 100th birthday year.
In 2012, Broverman created the popular annual Jewish Boy’s Christmas Show and has performed it to sold-out audiences in early December for the past few years. A highlight of 2013 was a featured appearance on the TVOntario show The Agenda, hosted by Steve Paikin, where he discussed and sang some of the songs of Johnny Mercer. He will be releasing a six-song EP in early 2016.
This evening’s singing star SAM BROVERMAN features jazz masters MARK KIESWETTER (piano) and JORDAN O’CONNOR (bass) entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
