Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Spring, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important instrumentalists and leading vocalists on today’s jazz scene in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Founding member of ‘The Shuffle Demons’, saxophone exemplar RICHARD UNDERHILL took this groundbreaking Bop Rap ensemble from the streets of Toronto across Canada and on tour throughout Europe more than 15 times. He received the Roy Thomson Hall Award of Recognition in 2008, won a 2003 Juno Award for his jazz debut recording, was nominated for a Juno again in 2007 and 2008, was a three-time nominee for the Grand Prix du Jazz at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and took home 2nd place in the 2008 International Songwriting Competition.
Underhill has performed and recorded with a lengthy list of other Canadian and international notables, and written arrangements for a diverse collective of important performers and ensembles. He has been musical director for the Kensington Festival of Lights since 2003 and currently sits on the Music Committee at the Toronto Arts Council and on the board of directors of Clay and Paper Theatre.
This evening’s all-star RICHARD UNDERHILL TRIO also features jazz masters EWEN FARNCOMBE on piano and ARTIE ROTH on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of The Home Smith Bar.
