Every Friday and Saturday throughout the sizzling summer, the coolest place to be is the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto where some of the most important instrumentalists on today’s jazz scene entertain in the charming intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Tonight, we feature Rio de Janeiro’s HENRIQUE CAZES, world-renowned virtuoso on the cavaquinho, the four-stringed lute that is a defining feature in a range of Brazilian music. With a passion for the performance of Choro (or Chorinho), musician, composer, arranger, and author, Henrique is respected as the ambassador of what Jobim referred to as ‘Brazil’s most authentic music’. He has recorded and performed with virtually every name in the Rio de Janeiro samba community, as well as many of Brazil’s most formidable artists, during a remarkable career spanning more than three decades. In addition to his many performing, recording, and publishing activities, he is the director of the cavaquinho program at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The CHORO CANADIOCA Quartet this evening also includes some of Toronto’s most accomplished Brazilian music performers — WAGNER PETRILLI (violão), JULIEN LABRO (accordion), and ALAN HETHERINGTON (pandeiro, percussion) — performing for your pleasure in the up-close-and-personal ambience of The Home Smith Bar.
