First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Internationally renowned Bebop Saxophonist PJ PERRY has shared stages with countless jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Michel LeGrand, Pepper Adams, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrell, Rob McConnell, Slide Hampton, Herb Spanier, Bobby Shew, Fraser McPherson, Tommy Banks, Joe LaBarbera, Clarence “Big” Miller, and Red Rodney. He was a featured soloist on the hit 2010 Broadway production of Come Fly Away, highlighting the songs of Frank Sinatra and the choreography of Twyla Tharpe.
In 2007, Perry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Alberta. In 1999, Justin Time Records released what would become a Juno-nominated recording of PJ and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Winner of a 1993 Juno Award for Best Jazz Recording for his album “My Ideal”, he received Jazz Report Magazine’s Critic’s Choice Award for Best Alto Saxophonist for a record seven years from 1993 to 1999.
In 2016, PJ Perry was awarded the Order of Canada.
This evening’s all-star PJ PERRY TRIO features jazz masters PJ PERRY on saxophone, NEIL SWAINSON on bass, and REG SCHWAGER (guitar), entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
