Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important instrumentalists and leading vocalists on today’s jazz scene in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
2014 Juno Award Winner MIKE DOWNES, is a bass preeminence whose extensive discography exemplifies his imposing talents as a musician, composer, and arranger. Ripple Effect, which won in the Traditional Jazz Album Category, is his fifth recording as leader (following Forces, Then, The Winds of Change, and In The Current). He also played integral roles in the earlier release of several other acclaimed recordings including Molly Johnson’s 2009 Juno Award-winning Luck, and Juno-nominated CDs from Molly Johnson, Lorne Lofsky, Ranee Lee, and Shirantha Beddage.
Mike Downes is the Bass Department Head at Humber College in Toronto. He has also been featured as a Yamaha artist/clinician throughout Canada, at the Paekche Institute in Seoul, South Korea and the infamous Conservatoire de Paris. He is the author of The Jazz Bass Line Book (Advance Music) and co-author of Jazz and Contemporary Music Theory.
One of the most sought-after musicians in the country, Downes has performed with a veritable who’s who of Canadian and international jazz artists, across the globe.
This evening’s all-star MIKE DOWNES TRIO features jazz masters MIKE DOWNES (bass), DAVE RESTIVO on piano, and ETHAN ARDELLI on drums, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of The Home Smith Bar.
