Julie Mahendran Trio

Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Fall & Winter, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.

JULIE MAHENDRAN is a soul-jazz artist currently based in Toronto. Born in Montreal and raised in Edmonton, she describes herself as “the musical black sheep” of a family with an unusual mix of French-Canadian and Tamil heritage. Though rooted in classical technique, Mahendran’s clear, powerful and expressive voice reflects musical influences from pop to soul, funk, and jazz. She is equally at home with a soaring melody as she is scatting vocalese.

In addition to studying with the likes of Cheryl Bentyne (Manhattan Transfer) at Berklee College of Music in Boston, she also attended Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton. Her love affair with big city energy has taken her to London and New York, as well as Hong Kong where she held a summer residency as the featured vocalist at the Four Seasons Hotel. Both of her independently-released CDs (Never Do Without You and Lovelight) have garnered rave reviews and enjoyed airplay on jazz radio programs worldwide.

This evening’s singing star JULIE MAHENDRAN features jazz masters ADREAN FARRUGIA on piano and ROBERTO OCCHIPINTI on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
