First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Named Best Artist of the Year by the Toronto Musicians’ Association; Vision Award winner (Premio a la Trayectoria); winner of three Juno Awards, four Juno nominations, one Grammy nomination, more than a dozen National Jazz Awards; recipient of the Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award; acclaimed by media as One of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians.
HILARIO DURAN makes his instrument sound like an orchestra and this virtuoso style makes him a favorite of legendary compatriot Chucho Valdés who named Hilario his successor in Cuba’s most modern big band, Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, which also included members of the future group Irakere. In the ’80s, Duran made his international breakthrough, working with Arturo Sandoval and Dizzy Gillespie.
An exceptionally gifted piano virtuoso, composer, arranger and musical director, Hilario Duran is ranked among the greats as one of the most important Cuban pianists, presenting Afro-Cuban music across Canada throughout the years. He has been honored by not only journalists, critics, and academics, but also by his peers and colleagues, with countless past collaborations and performances with a variety of artists.
Cuban born, Toronto’s own Hilario Duran has been called a Canadian treasure, internationally acclaimed as a pianist/arranger/bandleader/composer of the highest order. The Hilario Duran Trio is one of his most expressive musical collaborations, a format that offers a glimpse of future direction for Cuban-inflected music making a journey through various music styles from Afro-Cuban chants, to Danzon, Bolero, Cha-cha-cha in a Latin jazz show with Afro-Cuban music and elements of modern Jazz.
This evening’s all-star HILARIO DURAN TRIO features jazz masters HILARIO DURAN on piano, ROBERTO OCCHIPINTI on bass, and AMHED MITCHEL (drums), entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
