Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Spring, the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important instrumentalists and leading vocalists on today’s jazz scene for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
CHRIS GALE is a nationally recognized saxophonist, composer, producer and educator whose driving style and rich tone can be heard on more than 150 recordings. As a leader and a sideman, Gale has performed around the globe in theatres, clubs and at festivals, impressing crowds with his lyrical sensibility and soulful approach.
Since moving to Toronto in 1994, he has performed and recorded with Blue Rodeo, Ron Sexsmith, Colin James, Michael Kaeshammer, Brandi Disterheft, Jarvis Church, Jeff Healey, The Powder Blues Band, and Richard Underhill. He has appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival and performed with Randy Brecker, Garth Hudson, and Oliver Jones.
His first CD, “Strays Stays”, received critical acclaim and global airplay. “There’s a stylish Ellington sound stirring here…beautifully done with lush tenor work”. – Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star
“I’ll quite happily go out of my way to hear Chris Gale, a tenor saxophonist (among Toronto’s finest) who has matched an impressively sure, though not showy command of the instrument to a strong sense of its older and newer traditions in the service of a distinctive style that is timelessly melodic yet distinctively modern.”
- Critic and author Mark Miller
This evening’s stellar CHRIS GALE TRIO features jazz masters CHRIS GALE on saxophone, AMANDA TOSOFF (piano), and JON MAHARAJ on bass, entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
