First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.
Award-winning vocalist CAROL McCARTNEY, hailed by critics as “a voice for the future of jazz”, performs an evening of classics and contemporary arrangements, many of them from her most recent CD release entitled “Be Cool”. In a follow-up review, All About Jazz wrote, “Toronto native Carol McCartney records another impressive vocal statement on the breezy ‘Be Cool’ cementing her reputation as one of Canada’s finest jazz vocalists.”
McCartney was born and raised in North Toronto; in fact, in the Fall of 2013, the City of Toronto named a street after her “McCartney Street” (located in the Weston area where she grew up). Her impeccable vocals and finely tuned musicianship have made her a favourite among musicians and audiences alike. She has shared the stage with a virtual “Who’s Who” of jazz including Guido Basso, Bucky Pizzarelli, Slam Stewart, and the late great Peter Appleyard, who Carol worked with as his singer for 30 years. (She was one of the top ten Canadian jazz vocalists to be featured on Appleyard’s last CD “Sophisticated Ladies” in 2013.)
Other recordings that feature Carol McCartney include Chase Sanborn’s “Good to the Last Bop”, Bob Brough’s ” Like a Spring Day”, and popular jazz big band “Freeflight’s” Juno-nominated recording “Taking Flight”. She has recorded two solo CDs of her own: “A Night in Tunisia” in 2007 and the latest release “Be Cool” in 2014.
This evening’s singing star CAROL McCARTNEY features jazz masters BRIAN DICKINSON on piano, KIERAN OVERS on bass, and ETHAN ARDELLI (drums), entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
