Canadian Jazz Quartet with Bob DeAngelis

Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Fall & Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.

Respected across the national jazz scene for nearly three decades, the hard-swinging CANADIAN JAZZ QUARTET have established themselves, individually and collectively, among the elite of jazz musicians on air and in recording studios, in clubs and on concert stages, and at major music events and jazz festivals all over the country.

Founded by the late guitar luminary Gary Benson in 1987, the lineup has evolved over the years, but under the long-time current leadership of iconic vibes-master Frank Wright, today’s Canadian Jazz Quartet (FRANK WRIGHT on vibes, TED QUINLAN on guitar, PAT COLLINS on bass, DON VICKERY on drums) remains the standard of excellence in jazz in Canada.

After a record-breaking 9-year run creating new mainstream jazz collaborations weekly at leading downtown jazz venues, the classy CJQ now brings their graceful treatment of standards and original material to a “first Friday” residency at the Home Smith Bar, showcasing a different headlining superstar each month.

Juno Award-winning bandleader and instrumentalist, BOB DeANGELIS headlines and guitar master ANDREW SCOTT guests as the CJQ launch a new season at the Home Smith Bar.  Internationally recognized for his woodwind playing prowess, DeAngelis’s diverse performing career includes appearances at international jazz festivals from Toronto to Montreux.

Widely known as Canada’s own ‘King of Swing’, he was the featured soloist in the hit musical ‘Fosse’ where he recreated Benny Goodman’s legendary Carnegie Hall performance of ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’, and in 2008, DeAngelis’s own 50-piece Champagne Symphony staged a triumphant Carnegie Hall concert in New York when they performed in the 70th anniversary celebration of Goodman’s famous 1938 concert there.  In 2009, he was named National Jazz Awards’ “Clarinetist of the Year”.
