Bill McBirnie Trio

First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.

BILL McBIRNIE is a jazz and Latin flute specialist based in Toronto, Ontario.  He has studied with renowned American flutist Samuel Baron, distinguished Canadian flutist and composer Robert Aitken, and Cuban charanga legend Richard Egues.  He is known for his exceptional technique, and  also recognized as an accomplished improviser (notably in the bebop, swing and Latin idioms) as illustrated by his recordings as a sideman with the likes of Junior Mance, Irakere, Emilie-Claire Barlow, and Memo Acevedo.

He has produced three Extreme Flute projects and four acoustic jazz/Latin recordings under his own name — Nature Boy (featuring the Mark Eisenman Trio), Paco Paco (featuring Bernie Senensky), Mercy (featuring Robi Botos), and Find Your Place (an organ trio featuring Bernie Senensky) all of which have been entered in JAZZ.FM91′s regular spin cycle here in Canada as well as Bob Parlocha’s widely syndicated radio show in the USA.

McBirnie is the only flutist to earn a triple crown by winning all three of the USA National Flute Association’s jazz flute (1) Soloist, (2) Masterclass and (3) Big Band Competitions.  He has also been chosen Flutist of the Year by the Jazz Report Awards and nominated as Instrumentalist of the Year (for flute) and Album of the Year (for Paco Paco) at the National Jazz Awards.  More recently his album, Mercy, won a TIMA here in Canada and was nominated for an IMA in the USA.  His most recent release, Grain of Sand (with Bruce Jones) won a TIMA in Canada and was a finalist in the USA Songwriting Competition.  Several years ago Bill McBirnie was recruited personally by Sir James Galway to serve as his Resident Jazz Flute Specialist, and recently,  received a personal invitation to share the stage with Sir James for his last Toronto appearance at Koerner Hall.

This evening’s all-star BILL McBIRNIE TRIO features jazz masters BILL McBIRNIE  on flute, BERNIE SENENSKY on piano, and PAUL NOVOTNY (bass), entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
