Artie Roth Trio

First Tuesday and every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday throughout the Winter, The Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill Toronto showcases some of the most important entertainers on today’s jazz scene performing for your pleasure in the cozy intimacy of one of Toronto’s best-loved lounges.

Toronto-born jazz bassist ARTIE ROTH has been an active composer, bandleader, performer and educator in the national and international jazz communities, since his graduation from York University in 1992, and subsequent Masters Degree (2016) winning the Oscar Peterson Scholarship. Following two Canada Council sponsored study tenures in New York City (1993 and 1997), Roth returned to Toronto establishing himself as one of the busiest, full-time composer/performers in Toronto.

As a leader of his own group, he released “Parallels” in 2005, “Currently Experiencing” in 2013, and “Discern” in 2015.  In August of 2014), his contributions were acknowledged when he was the featured artist of the week on JAZZ.FM91′a website and on-air programming. In addition to leading his own group, Roth is also a member of, and contributing composer for The Rich Underhill Group, The Bob Brough Quartet, Kollage,  and The Jazz Collective.  He has recorded as a side person (bassist) on over 50 recordings including Juno Award-winning Rich Underhill Quintet “Tales from The Blue Lounge” and numerous other Juno-nominated CDs.

As well as being nominated for a National Jazz Award in the category of Bassist of the Year, he has had the honour of accompanying such jazz legends as Anita O’Day, Curtis Fuller, Barry Harris, and Marcus Belgrave. Concurrent with his performance career, Artie Roth is a bass instructor and ensemble coach at York University and Centennial College.

This evening’s stellar ARTIE ROTH TRIO features jazz masters ARTIE ROTH (bass), GEOFF YOUNG (guitar), and MIKE FILICE (saxophones), entertaining in the up-close-and-personal ambience of the Home Smith Bar.
